Tips from the Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Program

Four Easy Things You Can Do To Improve Energy Efficiency in Your Building/Facility

1. Improve Operations and Maintenance (O&M)
Simple O&M improvements — like scheduling regular HVAC tune-ups, cleaning filters, and checking controls — keep equipment running at peak performance and reduce wasted energy costs. Better Buildings resources emphasize good O&M as one of the most cost-effective strategies.

2. Adjust Temperature Setpoints and Thermostats
Setting thermostats to efficient levels during occupied and unoccupied periods and using programmable or smart thermostats can cut heating and cooling energy use significantly with minimal investment.

3. Seal and Insulate the Building Envelope
Reducing air leaks around doors, windows, and other penetrations and adding insulation where needed can lower heating and cooling loads. Weatherization measures are a commonly recommended retrofit in DOE guidance.

4. Engage Occupants and Staff in Energy Saving Practices
Encourage tenants and employees to switch off lights and equipment when not in use, participate in energy treasure hunts, and adopt simple conservation habits. Behavioral measures often yield sigficant savings with zero to low cost

**Implementing these straightforward measures can help reduce utility bills, improve building performance, and support long-term energy efficiency goals without major disruption to business operations.
